Last week in Japan, D2 Technologies (www.d2tech.com) announced that its mCUE converged communications software for the Android got a whole bunch of features, including the addition of IP video to its already robust HD voice and VoIP support.

Now available for new Android devices such as “tablets, HD media players, IP media phones, connected TVs and STBs,” mCUE includes a customizable user interface, an embedded, hardware-platform optimized voice/video media engine, HD voice support, an “industry leading” acoustic echo canceller (AEC), multi-protocol support including IMS, a complete Skype Integration, and a remote management interface.

Reading between the lines here, D2 is about ready to open up a lot of different Android-based devices for both HD voice and vide (see laundry list above). While D2’s hand has been strong in wireless implementations – 4G, WiFi, WiMax, LTE — the whole TV and STB thing is going to be interesting to watch, especially with Skype thrown in for good measure.

Down in Huntsville last week, an ADTRAN executive was bragging about one of its pieces of outdoor gear was so tough that it had been spec’ed and tested to take a shotgun blast at 10 feet — without the paint being scratched. I, of course, immediately asked to witness the test in person, but no joy there.

If the paint scratches, this means that the underlying material is exposed to the elements, leaving the container vulnerable to weathering and/or corrosion.

Needless to say, I would like to see this test on a YouTube video. I’m sure they do it under controlled conditions outdoors, rather than dumping everything into the back of someone’s pickup truck, setting things up out in a field, and then blasting away.

(Or, alternatively, putting it out in the woods, painting a bird or other game animal on it, and picking it up after the end of hunting season…)

Maybe shotgun testing could be one of the bonus media activities next year — altho’ I’m not sure I could trust some pundits with a loaded gun, given their “Ready, fire, aim” methodology.

Do they use a 12 gauge shotgun? 20? This is serious “Mythbuster” material — science, testing, and guns! Heck, R. Lee Ermey is cheap and will do anything for a buck, get HIM as the special guest tester if you won’t let me do it…

IP communications observer and serial blogger Andy Abramson has decided that, yes, it’s ok for the “V” in VoIP Watch to embrace video.

In a post yesterday,The V In VoIPWatch isn’t Just Voice any More, Andy crystallizes in one sentence what everyone didn’t really want to/couldn’t find a way to say — video conferencing is a parallel industry to VoIP these days. (Or if we’re going to do a “Star Trek” reference, a parallel universe

He also gives a longer a food-for-thought discussion on ad models in the video world (NOT video conferencing), saying the way to make money is not through direct ad sales, but more indirect ad methods.
