Upcoming events—ADTRAN/Huntsville, CES 2012, IT EXPO East 2012

Between now and the beginning of February, I’ll be at three different industry events.

ADTRAN media briefings – Huntsville, AL

ADTRAN’s annual briefing event, held in Huntsville. Always interesting because of what you learn about ADTRAN and its neighborhood community.

CES 2012 – Las Vegas

Held this year towards the beginning of the week, this is a multi-day ordeal. And not really in a good way.

Sunday, January 9 – Storage Visions 2012 and “CES Unveiled.” Never been to the former event, but it’s a hot topic this year with the flooding in Thailand causing ripples in the hard drive food chain.

Monday, January 10 – CES Press Day. Starts with the (always overcrowded) LG press launch at 8 AM, with a number of companies throughout the day, ending with the Digital Experience event at the MGM on Monday evening.

Tuesday, January 11 – First day of CES show floor. I start the day by hitting as many companies parked in Hilton suites as I can, then go to the show floor. Around noon, I go to “Lunch at Piaro’s” to check out the tabletop exhibits there, rest my feet, then go back out to the floor. The evening closes with ShowStoppers at the Wynn.

Wednesday, January 12 – More meetings day, trying to catch up with as many companies I can before I have to head to the airport for my redeye back home.

IT EXPO East 2012 – Miami, February 1-3, Miami Beach Convention Center

Don’t know if TMC will be holding a media on January 31; stay tuned.

However, there will be an HD voice session, on Thursday, Feb 2, at 2 PM (2/2/12 @ 2 ) that I will be moderating. You can find more info at the TMC conference program listing here.

I’ll be at Metaswitch Forum in Las Vegas from October 3 through October 6, so if you’re looking for an opportunity to brief face-to-face, this is it.

Coordination through the Metaswitch press people (Engage PR) is suggested, but not required.

There’s also an invite-only event where to go out to Mike Tyson’s house at 3:30 AM in the morning and try to see his tiger.

Have just firmed up my travel schedule for the next three months–

August 8, Gigaset reseller/press event, Dallas, TX

A quick overnight trip, no chance for briefings other than with Gigaset.

IT EXPO West 2011, September 13-15, 2011, Austin, Texas.

TMC is scheduling a press day on Monday, September 12, starting at noon. I’m also moderating two (2) panels at the event–

“Why Video is a Must for Enterprise Communications” – Tuesday, September 13, 12:30 PM to 1:15 PM.

“Evolving Interconnection – From TDM to IP to IMS Peering” – Wednesday, September 14, 3:00 PM to 3:45 PM.

Metaswitch Forum 2011, October 3-6, 2011, Bellagio Hotel, Las Vegas

I’ll be in from Monday afternoon local time through Thursday morning, so there’s plenty of open time for briefings.

Lining up August, Fall travel plans – IT EXPO West, Metaswitch Forum 2011

In August,I expect to make a day trip down to Dallas for the Gigaset love-in. Probably drive them nuts with HD voice questions.

If it’s September, it must be IT EXPO West. In Austin this year – a refreshing change from the LA/Miami circuit – from September 13 through 15. Austin is a great city, so I’m looking forward to the scenery.

In October, I’m trying to pin down dates for Metaswitch Forum 2011. The event will be at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada , October 3-6, but the nice part about a mid-week event in Vegas is decent hotel rooms within walking distance. I’ll probably be footsore at the end of the day, but what the heck… or worse yet, I’ll rent a car and run up my carbon footprint.

ADTRAN, Digium in recovery mode after Northern Alabama tornado spree

ADTRAN (www.adtran.com) and Digium (www.digium.com) is currently recovering from the massive hit of tornados that swept through the southeast, with primary power restored to its facilities yesterday. Digium says none of its personnel appeared to have been injured, but several employees sustained “sustained personal property loss or damage,” according to a blog post by CEO Danny Windham on April 28.

Northern Alabama was hit by a string of tornados on Wednesday, April 27, sweeping across the state and clobbering multiple counties, including Madison County and the city of Huntsville. The storms took out houses and power, resulting in a dusk-to-dawn curfew in many places.

Commercial power was cut to the Huntsville, Alabama high tech campus on Wednesday – where ADTRAN and Digium have their HQs. Both companies had their Huntsville facilities closed until power was restored late on Tuesday evening, May 3.

Both companies are now back in full operation, but employees continue to cope with the aftermath of the tornados destruction.

After my presentation, I’ll be on site through about 2 PM local time before I have to head to the airport.

Everybody intros cloud-communications service for Enterprise Connect

NOT from Orlando, Florida – Global Crossing, Verizon Business, and XO Communications all introduced cloud-based communications services today.

You can find more information on XO’s rollout of its HD voice and video service on HD Voice News. Key points out of its release are 1) They’re supporting HD voice and video on an enterprise-basis 2) Pay for service on a per-seat basis, with a choice of Cisco and Polycom phones. Key point NOT in XO’s release – They’re working with Neutral Tandem to exchange HD voice calls with other carriers.

Global Crossing (www.globalcrossing.com) had a rather generic announcement for its CaaS (Communication as a Service) introduction. You know, “combines company’s products, blah-blah, ‘pay-as-you-grow’ blah-blah, integral to our global cloud solution strategy, blah-blah, pay by the seat, blah-blah.” The distinct separator here is a mobile app that allows a user to join or host an audio conference from “popular mobile devices” (See, generic?) by clicking an icon and syncs meetings with users’ calendars.

Perhaps more interesting out of the Global Crossing announcement is it’s declaration that it’s developing additional cloud solutions to include virtual compute, storage and infrastructure capabilities, and a security offering, with future additions including a hosted app development environment and hosted software apps to “support strategic opportunities.”

I’m scratching my head wondering why GC just doesn’t announce it has bought a couple of hosting/cloud-y providers and be done with it. A strategic deal with Amazon would be cool too, but I’m shooting from the hip at the moment.

SIP Forum launches SIPNOC network operators conference

The SIP Forum (www.sipforum.org) has announced SIPNOC, the SIP Network Operators Conference. Isn’t this interesting….

The SIPNOC conference is designed for SIP network operations personnel, such as NOC engineers, “instead of a high-level conference for executives.” The event will be held at the Hyatt Dulles Hotel in Herndon, VA (yes, a short drive from Dulles Airport), April 25-27, 2011. More information on the event can be gleamed from www.sipnoc.org.

Expected attendees include telecommunications providers, major backbone operators, interconnect and wholesale solution providers, ISPs, cable operators, wireless network operators as well as large enterprises deploying major SIP initiatives.

Consumer Electronics Show 2011 “How to find/follow Doug”

I am rolling into Vegas on Tuesday morning and the first session for the media is the “State of Consumer Technology” industry brief at 2 PM, followed by…

Well, I don’t need to detail the full agenda since I’ll end up screaming after the first page, but suffice to say I’m going from dawn to beyond dusk into darkness for at least two of the four (4) day’s I’ll be out there.

Net-net: My working hours at CES will be from 8 AM to at least 8 PM or later. And if you are trying to find me after 10 PM local time, it’s likely to be embarrassing for both of us. I will be tired, sleep-deprived, and have sore feet.
