SIP Forum and i3 Forum partner for SIP-based carrier services interop (with Fax)

The SIP Forum (www.sipforum.org) and the i3Forum have joined forces to help “spur” the interoperability of SIP-based carrier services, with Fax over IP (FoIP) being at the top of the list.

Believe it or not, FoIP still has plenty of headaches so the SIP forum and the i3 Forum are getting together to create a coalition of operators and equipment vendors together to work together to address key interop issues around the deployment of T.38 in SIP-based networks.

The SIP Forum’s FoIP Task Group has been plugging away at the problems since late 2008 and have leadership representatives from Cisco, Faxcore, LSI, and Digium; companies represented include Alcatel-Lucent, AT&T, Cox Communications, Dialogic, Lexmark, NeuStar, Nortel, Orange, Samsung, Siemens, Sonus Networks, and teridian.

in October of this year, the i3 Forum is expected to deliver a document devoted to addressing the specification guidelines for fax gateways together with the recommended test suites.

A spokesperson for SIP Forum said that after FoIP is done, there are many other topics to tackle.
